June 2010 Budget – announcements related to energy and climate change

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Over the last year Anglian Home Improvements has championed the need for assistance from Local and National Government by supporting the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) Petition for a National Window Scrappage Scheme. This would have given homeowners some additional financial assistance in improving their homes efficiency through replacing current old windows with new, more efficient replacements.

One of Anglian’s ongoing promotions is our very own scrappage scheme, financed by Anglian where we give homeowners up to £2500 for their old windows as payment towards new, more efficient double glazing.

Anglian Scrappage Scheme

Since the beginning of this promotion the country has voted for change through the general election and we, the country are now starting a new era of Government control and setup, we are governed by a Coalition Government for the very first time.

With new leaders come new ideas, policies and direction. In June the Chancellor delivered the budget statement to the House of Commons. This set out a detailed plan on how the new Coalition will counter the current huge national debt we, as a country, find ourselves burdened with.

But with a new budget come new environmental policies and funding changes. With Anglian recently announcing the launch of Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic products for the home, we are helping homeowners cut their own C02 emissions with these products. But what are the new Government planning to do, noted below and sourced from the Department of Energy and Climate Change outlines 6 key announcements:

1. The Budget sets out a comprehensive and credible plan to deal with the nation’s debts and significantly accelerate the reduction in the budget deficit over the course of this Parliament.  Deficit reduction and ensuring economic recovery are the most urgent issues facing the UK and the Government’s top priorities.

2. The Prime Minister has pledged to make this the greenest government ever.  The Government believes that climate change is one of the most serious threats that the world faces.  This includes reducing the Government’s own emissions by ten per cent between mid-May 2010 and mid-May 2011.

3. The Government is committed to playing its part in moving to a low-carbon economy.  This transition will change the shape of industry, growth and jobs in the future.  As part of this, the UK needs £200 billion of investment by 2020 to provide secure low-carbon energy.  This will require reform of the energy market and action to attract additional private sector funding.

4. The Budget sets out key steps towards this goal:

  • assessing how the energy tax framework can provide the right incentives for investment, alongside wider market reforms.  In the autumn, the Government will publish proposals to reform the climate change levy in order to provide more certainty and support to the carbon price. Subject to consultation, the Government intends to bring forward relevant legislation in Finance Bill 2011.
  • putting forward detailed proposals on the creation of a Green Investment Bank, following the Spending Review, to help the UK meet the low-carbon investment challenge.  The Government is considering a range of options for the scope and structure of the Green Investment Bank; and
  • establishing a Green Deal for households through legislation in the Energy Security and Green Economy Bill, to help individuals invest in home energy efficiency improvements that can pay for themselves from the savings in energy bills.  The Government will also continue to progress work on creating green financial products to provide individuals with opportunities to invest in the infrastructure necessary to support the green economy.

5. The Government will make the tax system fairer. The Budget covers:

  • fair fuel stabiliser.  The Chancellor will ask the Office for Budget Responsibility to undertake an assessment over the summer of the effect of oil price fluctuations on the public finances.  Informed by this assessment, the Government will examine options for the design of a fair fuel stabiliser;
  • remote rural areas.  The Government is considering the case for introducing a fuel duty discount in remote rural areas, including possible pilot schemes in Scotland; and
  • aviation taxation.  The Government will explore changes to the aviation tax system, including switching from a per-passenger to a per-plane duty, which could encourage fuller planes.  Major changes will be subject to public consultation.

6. The Budget confirms some previous announcements, that the Government will:

  • include nitrous oxide gases in the EU Emissions Trading System from 2011;
  • reduce the discount from the climate change levy for industries participating in a climate change agreement from 80 to 65 per cent in April 2011, and increase the climate change levy in line with inflation;
  • increase the standard rate of landfill tax by £8 per tonne on 1 April 2011 until at least 2014, and introduce a floor so that that the rate will not fall below £80 per tonne until at least 2020;
  • increase aggregates levy to £2.10 per tonne in 2011;
  • introduce an enhanced capital allowance for zero-carbon goods vehicles from April 2010;
  • introduce exceptional rates of vehicle excise duty for certain heavy goods vehicles from April 2011; and
  • reform company car tax so that it continues to provide an incentive to purchase the lowest emitting vehicles on the market

The plans seem fairly comprehensive but only time will tell on how effective these announcements become and most importantly what effect they have on the environment.

Double glazing hits the road

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Over the years we have seen energy efficient double glazing being installed throughout homes, offices and boats but today even I was taken by surprise when I stumbled across this white van on twitter;

White Van takes their double glazing everywhere

I’m not sure whether the owner of this vehicle could claim ”special circumstances” for a lower road tax payment due to the energy efficient modification he has purchased for his vehicle. Probably not?!

Over the last decade we have seen working models of Solar Powered Cars as well and perhaps over the next 20 years we will slowly see a more affordable and sustainable introduction of this type of technology for the road.

Recently Anglian announced the launch of Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic technology for the home which not only means your home becomes more energy efficient but also allows the home owner the possibly to generate revenue from selling unused units of power back to the electricity companies.

Double-glazed windows can save money and the environment

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Homeowners who embrace energy efficiency can save themselves money and reduce their households impact on the environment by investing in insulating products, such as double glazing, according to one expert.

Richard Clarke, chairman at 1st Action, said that homeowners can reduce their carbon emissions and also save themselves a lot of money by being more energy efficient.

“There are many simple ways to save energy in the home but the most important thing you can do is to ensure that your home has good insulation and that the source of heat is as controlled and efficient as possible,” he said.

Mr Clarke added that by being better insulated, homes will lock in heat and therefore keep carbon emissions low, along with energy bills.

Anglian also recently announced the launch of Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic energy efficient products. These will also reduce the cost of energy; allow return on investment and even generating income from power generation.

Last month the Blog Team reported on Christine Shine who has installed 390 Photovoltaic panels within the grounds of her home. The result of this not only means that Christine Shine covers a majority of her electrical costs but generates a good level of income through selling units back to the grid.

You’ll be all “WHITE” with A-rated Windows

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been writing about the different energy efficiency improvements in the home. Most recent Blog posts have focused on Solar Thermal and Photo Voltaic technology and how investing in these can not only make your home more efficient but also possibly provide an additional income.

However not everyone will be in the position to consider this type of home improvement. Reasons for this could vary from either a financial or practical perspective like living in a flat. Homeowners will still look towards a more improving their homes by replacing your windows for a more efficient design.

I have been told several times recently that homes that have or desire an alternative colour window to white struggle to get the ultimate A-rated efficient window in other colours. The question is why can’t we supply an A rated Mahogany or Rosewood uPVC window?

It's White

Taking the Anglian Mahogany, Rosewood and Golden Oak windows first. Due to their dark colour these window frames will absorb, unlike white, far more heat and being a thermal plastic are liable to expand to a greater extent. To combat this Anglian dark woodgrain windows are always fully reinforced. This additional steel reinforcement reduces the thermal performance of the frames. As such even if we were to use low iron glass in the out pane we would be unable to achieve an A rating.

As you can see from the above it is a balancing act to ensure that our windows meet all the stringent performance criteria that we expect, whilst at the same time achieve a thermal performance.

Whilst the majority of window companies are able to offer an A rated white uPVC window, it is far more difficult to achieve an A rated dark woodgrain finished window that has the same performance characteristics. So the questions to ask is if you find a company that actually has an A rated dark woodgrain Window Energy Rating or do they possess one for white only? If they do, have they compromised on the performance of the window (i.e. not fully reinforced) to achieve this standard?

The summer of 2010 could be the perfect time to make eco-friendly home improvements.

Friday, June 4th, 2010

It looks set to be another hot weekend therefore no need to heat your home as you can just relax in nature’s warmth from the sun.

Sunny Day

People all over the country will be enjoying the weather and warmth from their homes conservatory as well. It’s the perfect opportunity to sit down, relax, read a good novel and utilise the conservatory as the ultimate in summer rooms.

Enjoying the summer in your Anglian conservatory

Thinking about it this summer could be the perfect opportunity for people to invest in energy-efficient home improvements and according to two experts, they think that serious money can be saved in the process. People also use technology like solar thermal and photo voltaic to convert the suns energy into heat or power.

Dr Hasim Altan, from the University of Sheffield, and Emma Thompson, from E.ON, said that because there is no need to have heating on during summer, homeowners can use the money they save on bills to invest in things like double glazing.

“Because your heating bills are typically lower because people would have their heating off at this time of year, they can potentially look at spending a little bit more money throughout this summer period to insulate their properties,” stated Ms Thompson.

The expert added that homeowners can save around a third on their heating bills if they properly insulate their property.

A recent study by Dr Altan found that Great Bow Yard in Somerset, where all the homes were built after 2000, was named the UK’s most energy-efficient street. The least energy-efficient house in the UK was thought to be a typical pre-1900 farm house in Shropshire.

Anglian currently offers an energy efficient scrappage scheme where old inefficient windows can be replaced by new efficient ones with money off for your current windows.

Energy-efficient windows ‘can create big savings’

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Blog Profile Russell

Do you own a house and fancy saving around £500 pound per year! If I saved £500 it would probably be spent on a new TV just in time for the 2010 World Cup. Enough of that though, this is how you can do it:

 Homeowners can save themselves lots of money on heating bills and energy costs when they invest in eco-friendly replacement windows such as double glazing, according to an expert, who believes that around £500 a year can be saved.

Giles Willson, director for technical affairs at the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC), said that energy-efficient windows can help homeowners to stop heat being wasted and leaked out of poorly insulated houses.

“What we can say and what makes it very useful for homeowners, [is] we know that on average, it is nearly £500 a year that a homeowner can save by changing a window,” he stated.

The expert added that because the lifespan of the window is 30-35 years homeowners will be investing in a very cost-effective product. Anglian Home Improvements are currently offering up to £2500 towards your new energy efficient windows for scrapping your old ones. Please click here for more details.

Recently the BFRC said that a third of Brits believe a house loses most heat through the roof, when in fact heat loss through poorly insulated windows is the single biggest contributor to a home’s chill factor.

Energy efficiency consistencies between coalition parties

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The new coalition government between the Conservative party and the Liberal Democrats could boost people looking to carry out energy-efficient home improvements in their homes.

John Alker, head of advocacy at the UK Green Building Council, said that recent talks between the two parties when it was revealed that there was to be a hung parliament could be a “good thing” for the sustainability market.

“I think we could see a fair amount of agreement and the fact that we have got a Lib Dem [Chris Huhne] in place at the Department of Energy and Climate Change I am taking as pretty good news,” he added.

Mr Alker went on to say that people will be encouraged to carry out home improvement projects as both the Lib Dems and Conservatives have similarities in their views on the environment and sustainability.

Recently, Tony Rooke, environmental manager for Logica, said that more British homeowners need to alter their approach towards eco-friendly property improvements, which could be helped by the new coalition government.
