Summary of Garden ER’s Final Episode!

What an amazing episode to finish off an amazing gardening series. I was really looking forward to see the Celeb Garden section which features Bonnie and the Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps star, Will Mellor.

Will and Bonnie

Ever since I started to watch that show, I was hooked and that was all because of Mellor and his sense of humour. Okay, so the good looks and muscles helped a bit as well :) .

I was most certainly not disappointed with this section as it was nice to see that he is a cheeky chappy in real life, and not just on screen with the characters he plays. However I was slightly surprised to seem him needing the help of two other lads and Bonnie to move that old water feature, but as the old saying goes; looks can be deceiving!

Old Water Feature

When he broke the handle off the fork whilst trying to dig up one of the old plants, I started to laugh as it couldn’t have happened to anyone else but him, and it was so nice to see him get really enthusiastic about gardening and get stuck in with Bonnie and the team. All I have to do is just look at my garden, get depressed and walk away from it. I suppose though, once you start it you can enjoy it :) .

To be honest though, when AJ brought out the new water feature for Will’s garden, I was a slightly unsure as it seemed to be a little taller than what I would have expected to put in such a small garden space, but knowing that this was Bonnies’ creation, I would not be disappointed and once the plants were starting to form around the feature, it made the garden look ten times better. The plants themselves looked amazing in their own right, and the idea of splitting the fern plant apart was very good.

One of the tips that Bonnie and David explained about cutting the lawn, I found to be rather interesting as I never realised that the length of cutting your grass could affect the growth of it. That could explain why every time my boyfriend mows the lawn, more weeds start to grow and take over the garden. I think I might have to start mowing our lawn from now on. Maybe.

And when I started to see Bonnie, (and what looked like stumbling along) on the grass in her heels, I seriously did think ‘What on Earth is she doing?’, until she explained the benefits of creating small holes in the ground to help airate it so the oxygen and water can get into the ground whilst letting out the carbon dioxide. Unfortunately I don’t really fancy damaging my high heeled shoes, so I guess I’m going to have to use the fork instead.

Another tip that Bonnie and David demonstrated was the tomato juice mixing with the dog food to reduce the ammonia in the dog’s pee to stop the grass from burning away after the dog had done ‘toilets’ (as I like to call it when making my dogs go outside to do their business). I was rather proud of myself when they mentioned this as it was a tip that I already knew about and regularly add to my dog’s food when I feed them.

Now as this was the last episode I was expecting David and the team to create a fantastic garden to mark the end of the series and as the last budget to be used would be the grand prize of £10,000 I was hoping not to be disappointed. I can safely say that I wasn’t!

When the lilac bamboo fencing was unravelled and placed on the original fencing, I was a little concerned about the colour for the garden as I wasn’t sure it would be ideal, but once the rest of the garden was finished, the colour was perfect as it helped to lighten up the area and make it look bigger. If they had just left the fencing natural or used a darker colour then I don’t think it would have had the same effect and perhaps made the garden look duller and smaller.

Another garden piece that they used, were the natural paving stones for the patio which I absolutely loved. Of course, as Will (the patio specialist) mentioned, it is rather difficult to lay them down properly as being natural, they haven’t been made with a finish so they’re not completely level, compared to a cheaper replacement with a similar effect.

I was also impressed with using the solar panels to use as energy to power the water feature as its more energy efficient and anything that helps environment gets my vote . It was particularly refreshing to see a garden using resources like this.

The perspex gazebo was also an amazing feature in the garden as it helped to give it a modern look. It had previously been used in ‘Naked Garden’ that David created for Anglian Home Improvements in the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show (which also won a Silver medal).

The artificial grass was a nice touch to the garden too as its low maintenance which is ideal for the couple, especially if they don’t have any gardening experience. Plus it will look elegant and well kept all year round.

Overall I thought it was the best episode out of the whole series and was a brilliant ending to a very inspirational gardening programme.
