RHS Britain In Bloom Finalists – Bristol
Here is another finalist from Bristol for Britain In Bloom which is supported by Anglian Home Improvements.
The name of the project is Brandon Hill Coummunity Orchard and Herb Garden which will be located in one of their parks. Brandon Hill is the oldest municipally owned open space in the country which dates back to 1174.
Here is their description of the project:
The Orchard is planned for a south west facing slope behind Rosebery Terrace. This part of the hill is currently grass. The orchard will be planted by teams of volunteers (about 40 volunteers in total) with heritage varieties of fruit and nut trees including apple, pear, quince, mulberry, plum, cherry, walnut and hazel. The orchard will consist of about 20 trees. The Herb Garden is planned for a bed at the side of Cabot Tower. The bed will be cleared and improved, as the bed-rock is near the surface, to allow a variety of herbs and possibly fruit bushes to be grown. The improvement will also ensure easy access to pick the herbs. Volunteers will do the planting.
Leaflets will be produced on each of the varieties, giving their locations on the hill, how to identify them, how they should be looked after and how they can be used. These leaflets will be created in the first instance with the help of the local school children.
Publicity will be required for the launch event and for future activities to ensure that it continues to be utilised by the community.
The requested amount will buy the herbs for the herb garden.
This will give us a focus to engage the local community with the hill, to make the area more attractive, and to provide educational and recreational activities. This will increase the sense of ownership of and responsibility for the hill leading to a decrease in the current level anti-social behavior, litter and graffiti.
Above all it will provide produce that can be used by the whole community.
