Presentation recognises long service

With nearly 1,000 years of service between them 31 Anglian employees proudly stepped forward to receive their certificates marking at least three decades of service.

The November presentation, by Group Finance Director Phil Tweedie, was marked by a lunch at Anglian’s social club, in Norwich. “It is a privilege and honour to be able to acknowledge and recognise such outstanding loyalty and commitment to the company” said Phil. Malcolm Holman and Charlie Pointer headed the league table with 40 years service. Manufacturing was well represented in the 30-year wards with 24 out of the 29 recipients. But not everyone was from Norwich – Eliza Hamilton has been working in Kent since 1978.

Her career began in admin in Sittingbourne, and today she is the central administration manager looking after five regions and 17 surveyors. “Although I am back in Sittingbourne, I have spent part of my time with Anglian on the road,” explained Eliza. “For eight years from 1997 I was a trainer – firstly on the new computer system and then keeping everyone abreast of updates. “I travelled everywhere from Scotland to Cornwall, and helped compile a couple of training manuals along the way. “When I started with Anglian all data had to be packaged up and sent to Norwich for inputting, now with modern systems we can access upto-date reports instantly.” For Malcolm and Charlie their’s is a joint story. Malcolm, a joiner by trade, joined Anglian fitting double glazing. In those days there were 24 people in manufacturing at the Bawburgh factory, and six fitters. After three years he moved on to become a surveyor. But not long after he started his fitter’s job he bumped into a friend Charlie Pointer in a pub. Charlie’s employer had just gone out of business and Malcolm arranged an interview for him for a job over a glass of Guinness. “At 50p an hour I was glad of the work,” admits Charlie.

He also moved from manufacturing to surveying. Today he is involved in training and is currently looking at ways to ensure surveyors work in ways to help make production more cost effective by reducing the number of remakes. Malcolm recollects the changes in products over the last four decades. “When we moved into using aluminium that was a big step,” he recalls. “But I can’t see anything superseding what we do now. People want low maintenance and that’s what we give them together with quality.”
