First Aid for 3rd Thetford Beaver Colony

On Wednesday night I had the pleasure of being asked to join the 3rd Thetford Beaver colony for their weekly gathering, this weeks fun filled evening was to learn First Aid.
The reason for my invitation was that Anglian Home Improvements had donated some of our obsolete bandages which are no longer within their use by date for their lesson. Normally these items would be disposed of, but as they are otherwise in perfect condition, we have donated these to the 3rd Thetford Beaver’s for their First Aid training evenings.

Now if you’re not familiar with modern Scouting, the Beavers are the youngest members of the Scout Association, aged approx 6 to 8 yrs old. As a company First Aider it was interesting to see how these youngsters were being trained on a reasonably complex topic. My praise has to go to the leaders, who showed great skills by enthusing, whilst controlling 25 plus excitable youngsters.
The children all listened intently as they were told about the correct procedure for notifying the emergency services and how to care for an unconscious casualty. This was rehearsed at length as each took their turn in being the casualty, first on scene and Emergency services operator. Being invited to be the casualty filled me with a little trepidation, but they followed their training impeccably and I’d feel confident they would feel much more capable if there was an issue which needed the emergency services.

Although a quite intense learning experience, all enjoyed themselves and a few shy faces grew with confidence as the night proceeded and towards the end when the triangle bandages rolled out, anyone nearby was applied with a sling, ever the gathered mums on the sidelines.

The triangle bandages and dressings were put to use by these lively boys and girls as they managed to tie slings on one another and relished in their new found skills.

It’s with great pride that Anglian Home Improvements can help provide these young people with the equipment that then helps them develop life skills, which could one day make such a massive difference to another’s life.

We fully support the work the Scout Association does and hope they continue to develop such wonderful young people.
