Anglian Home Improvements sponsor future role model awards

This week saw the recognition given to the Young People of the Year “YOPEY”, held in Norfolk for the first time.

YOPEY was founded by Tony Gearing in 2005, to counter all the bad press young people receive in the media, much accounted to anti-social behaviour.

Fourteen young people made it through to the final. Winners would be rewarded for their community work and given an additional cash prize.

Companies like Anglian Home Improvements and Norfolk and Suffolk Police establishments attended the awards and donated £4,000 in prize money.

Each of the fourteen nominated finalist individually went up onto the stage where their own stories were heard. Just over a third of the nominations walked away with the prize money with half pledging their share back to charity.

Anglian Home Improvements sponsored and presented one particular award which went to Tiffany Pearson.

Tiffany from Downham Market cares for her mother Rita, who at 48 is terminally ill with cancer whilst caring for her younger brother as well. Her nomination was put forward by her teacher Louise Tills who said:

“Tiffany has been caring for her mum and brother for some time; she has always been the carer at home, since before we knew her mother was terminally ill.

As soon as we heard of these awards I nominated her, she is the person in my mind who deserves it.”

Tiffany surprised at the awards said:

“I am really shocked but honoured to be a  part of the awards”

Norfolk County Councillor Shelagh Gurney expresses her delight at the awards:

“I just think this is an absolutely wonderful opportunity to recognise the achievements of young people today. I would Like to thank them all, Norfolk should be proud of their unsung heroes”
