Today we have a very special guest post from Ian Ridley. Anglian were delighted to be given the opportunity earlier this year to sponsor Ian and support the Intensive Care Society in a fundraising activity. The aim was to conquer the dizzy heights of Everest which is a challenge of monumental proportions.
Ian has written us a fantastic blog taking you on a journey through the highs and low, challenges and successes Ian and his team confronted during their epic Everest adventure;
“Why climb Everest? Numerous people have asked me that I don’t have a definitive answer. I suppose it is the challenge. Having climbed extensively in the Alps, I wanted to push myself further. The highest I had been previously was in October of last year when I climbed Ama Dablam (6686m), which is also in the Himalayas, and approximately 20 miles south of Everest.
I decided I would raise some money for the Intensive Care Society which aims to advance and promote the care of critically ill patients. In simple terms, these are the doctors who care for patients on life support. Vital work if heaven forbid you or a relative should require their help. Anglian Windows kindly supported my efforts with an extremely generous donation of £2500
The Cancer Brown Dog charity was formed in 2000 by former cancer patients Mark Storer with Peter Little and Anil Patel.
The aim of the charity is to raise much needed funds for men, women and children that suffer from Cancer. Every penny raised goes towards helping someone less fortunate.
Anglian recently sponsored Natalie May who was one of 62 people that came together to raise money for the charity by completing an incredible walk which covered 8 peaks within the Peak District and finishing at Scafell Pike peak. That’s 24 miles in 14 hours which is a phenomenal challenge.
Natalie speaking after the walk had this to say:
“Everything went really well thank you. We started off at 4am and despite the training that I had undertaken, nothing could have prepaired me for the challenge that lay ahead. We achieved our goal of climbing 8 mountains in 14 hours, the last mountain being Scafell Pike – the highest peak in England!! It was an amazing day and I am very proud to have been a part of a team of volunteers who between us raised just over £69,000.00 for the Brown Dog Charity raising money for people with Cancer, a cause very close to my heart, thankyou Anglian Home Improvements for sponsoring me along with many members of Anglian staff.”

If you didn’t know that South Africa 2010 kicks off tomorrow you must have been reading a very good novel! The sheer magnitude of the event coupled with the unprecedented media coverage has made South Africa 2010 one of the biggest sporting events of all time.
Turn the radio on, TV, or log onto your new shiny Ipad and within seconds you become overwhelmed and inundated by World Cup content from the smallest marketing gimmicks to full on campaign.
World Cup fever has also crept its way into the Anglian Call Centre where management and staff alike have got into the spirit of South Africa 2010.
Desks have been decorated with the participating nation’s flags, colours and stats! Special football themed dress down days are planned throughout the World Cup with proceeds going to charity.
With around 30 days of international football kicking off this Friday it will be 4 weeks of sporting drama to remember. This Saturday at 7.30pm myself and probably most of the country will be supporting England and hoping they go all the way!
So, another year and another classic car rally at the Anglian Windows Sports & Social Club! Taking place last Sunday at the club and its grounds in Norwich, I popped down to see what beauties were in store for us in 2010. Don’t worry – being the only member of the online team here at Anglian with a great passion for cars, I wasn’t too fussed to be working on a Sunday
Similar to last year’s car rally it was drizzling most of the day but the faces I saw were far from drab. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, whether it was checking out the old Ford Capris in their various shades of 70s beige, trying to get in that Italian Job pose with the vast number of Minis about or just simply admiring the diversity of different car models to see.
There were various stalls selling food and drinks as well as a raft of people selling their old wares, but I am sure you’re all mainly hoping for a few pictures of the aforementioned cars! So without further ado, here is a selection of pictures I took on the day…
Lovely VW Camper van with accompanying trailer
Capris
Some rather beautiful ‘American muscle’ cars!
On our travels round we also saw a rather nice vintage 1985/86 5.3L 12V Jaguar XJS, which was for sale for just over £2000. With only 93,000 on the clock it looked like a bit of a bargain but I managed to stop myself getting carried away when I saw how many more cars there were to visit
The lovely Jaguar
There were loads more cars around and I’ve posted some more pictures for your viewing pleasure below.
A huge range of cars from all around the world were at the rally
The Anglian Classic Car rally happens every year in June and we hope to see you all there in 2011 for more car spotting and stories! Hope you enjoyed the pictures!
Cookham Dean Cricket Club have had a glazing makeover with new replacement windows and doors installed within the communities cricket pavilion.
Geroge Allard spokesman for the club said
“The difference it has made to our club is enormous.30 years ago we were a tiny village club playing on the village green. Over the past 5 years we have grown quickly. We are the only cricket facility for the youngsters of the village and we now have 5 adult teams playing every weekend and over 100 children playing competitive cricket”
Below is a selection of photos from Friday evening were local children and parents got to enjoy the new facilities:

Anglian was represented at a very special event recently at Sandringham House in the presence of HRH, The Princess Royal. HRH is Patron of Livabiity an organisation dedicated to working with disabled and disadvantaged people and enabling them to have choices, opportunities and a degree of independence in their lives.
Anglian’s Chief Executive Mr. Peter Mottershead and Melanie McDonald from the Marketing department were introduced to HRH and were able to explain directly to the Princess how Anglian are installing a conservatory into Livability’s latest project at John Grooms Court in Norwich. Livability is hoping to raise almost £700,000 to embark on a major building initiative to enable the 20 young adults at John Grooms Court to have their own flatlet within the complex which will allow for individual kitchens and bathrooms. Unlike most other accommodation in the area for disabled young people, residents have the opportunity to live independently and acquire new skills within a supportive environment. The Anglian conservatory will create a year round communal relaxation area which can be used for indoor gardening and other hobbies.
An African holiday is going to be anything but sun and beaches for Cambridge’s installation manager Daniel Moore.
Daniel Moore getting ready for Enduro Africa
Although there will be an element of both, Daniel’s eight days riding on South Africa’s Eastern Cape in October will be a challenge! Together with other motorbike riders he will be taking on Enduro Africa. It will see them ride from Port Elizabeth to Durban along what is known as the wild coast. The 2,000 kilometre offroad trip, to raise money for four charities, will take in river crossings, steep ascents of mountains and rough terrain, as well as riding on beaches.
“Enduro Africa is a unique and challenging motorcycle adventure in aid of 4 amazing causes – UNICEF, Sentebale – The Princes’ Fund for Lesotho, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Touch Africa”.
Daniel decided to undertake the ride after a friend successfully completed Enduro Africa two years ago, other participants have included Princes William and Harry.
Meeting the challenge not only requires a certain amount of doggedness in the saddle, Daniel is hoping to raise £5,000. “Riders from all over the world take part,” he explained. “The money we raise goes partly to the charities, but it also funds buying the motorbikes we will be riding. “At the end of Enduro Africa the bikes are donated to local medical charities to help people like doctors and aid workers get to isolated villages to treat their patients. “We ride for 10 hours everyday. On day six we have a rest while the bikes are serviced. On that day we go to a local village and help with a project through one of the four charities we are supporting – Touch Africa”. “Last year the riders repaired and decorated a school and put together desks and chairs.”
A keen biker, Daniel’s usual riding takes in going to work, holidays or bike festivals. “I have had some great sponsorship from colleagues at Anglian already,” he added. “But it is quite a challenge to raise £5,000 and more help would be greatly appreciated please. “People can donate online at www.dans-enduroafrica-2010.co.uk, via a link to paypal.”
