Light bulb That Lasts a Lifetime
I find nothing more frustrating than having to change a light bulb, especially ones that are tricky to get to. Well, that could be a once-in-a-lifetime job to do as some bright sparks at Samsung have created an LED light bulb with a lifespan of 40,000 hours, that’s 40 times more than a regular incandescent bulb!
Samsung, who are market leaders for LCD televisions, that actually use LED bulbs as back-lights for a TV, have made the natural transition to making long life, energy efficient light bulbs. They are leading the way in televisions and now hope to help raise the standard of your home’s energy efficiency too.
The company claims that with normal use, the bulbs should last for 36 years, using its digital electronics expertise to create revolutionary lighting. LED lights are now common in the every day home and appliances, but none offer such an incredible lifespan, which means Samsung are leading the way in the lighting industry.
The Samsung LED lights turn on instantly, giving off virtually no UV or infrared rays, giving a crisp light to brighten up your room, whilst saving you money off of your energy bills and helping the environment. Sounds like the perfect light to me!
The bulbs are only available in the US at the minute. The basic model costs about $19, and the larger, brighter models can set you back $70! It seems like an initial big hit, but if you think of the amount of bulbs you would buy in 36 years, does it all weigh up? I think it probably does, but my guess is the price will be reduced in time.
These bulbs are great for energy efficiency, but in a couple of year’s time they may be on its way out as a new type of light may be on its way in. Eden Park has been researching and attempting to build an ultra-thin light. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has created wafer-thin, flexible plasma sheets, which could then be used anywhere!
These lights would be not only be the latest in flexible electricals, but it would be a new energy efficient method. They can be dimmed, contain no mercury and generate a lot less heat than LED’s, which makes them a viable solution for the future. However, although materials are cheap, they won’t be in the shops for a couple more years, as the rate of production is not at full potential yet.
Who knows what other ingenious creations will be made in the coming years?!
