Is there such a thing as ‘free’ solar panels?
Homeowners beware, you could lose out on some serious cash should you hire out your roof to companies offering you free solar panels.
Which? consumer group has found that you could earn up to £10,500 over 25 years should you have your own solar panels installed, rather than selling your roof space, which sees ‘rent-a-roof’ companies take the feed-in-tariff (FIT) money for themselves. In addition to this you will see significant savings on your own energy bill.
In the sunniest parts of the country, these companies could be taking a whopping £1,300 from us each year, which for most of us is a generous
amount of money. Not only that we are only going to be saving a maximum of £412 a year on our energy bills. This all seems very unfair on us.
Which? states that the companies tend to keep very quiet about these vital statistics, leading to us believing we have a better deal than we actually do. How are these companies managing to accomplish this so well? I think a lack of knowledge about the governments FIT scheme might be to blame, so here is a basic description.
1. You install Photovoltaic solar panels, which produce 5MW or less energy.
2. Make sure these are then installed and accredited by Microgeneration Certification Scheme installers.
3. You then register with a supplier for FITs, which adds the generator to the Central register.
4. Inform the supplier of your meter readings.
5. Your recieve payments, depending on the amount of energy being produced.
It’s as simple as that! You can save money each year should you invest in solar panels, but it is making sure you get the best deal possible for your household. Don’t be mislead by the ‘rent-a-roof’ companies out there to earn your cash, install them yourself and reap the benefits.
