Global Warming Not To Be Taught In Schools Across England & Wales

An article published on the Daily Mail website yesterday, has informed us that climate change could be facing the axe from classrooms all over England and Wales, in a bid to strip science ‘back to basics.’

Global warming not to be taught in classrooms

In my opinion, I don’t believe this to be a very sensible idea, for our children and future children’s sake. I didn’t take Geography during my GCSE’s so I don’t know how much has changed in the past 5 years within the curriculum, but looking back, I wish I had. Then at least I would have had some knowledge about global warming and climate change and how it affects us. Obviously I know some information now, thanks to television documentaries, blogs and newspaper articles, but there seems to be a constant battle between fact and fiction by experts.

The Daily Mail carries on to state that the move will please many critics who feel climate change should not be taught as scientific fact, which I agree to in some form, but what I don’t understand is how they are making it look like that they are ignoring signs of ‘possible’ climate change and global warming.

For example, I was visiting relatives in Tennessee during May, and when I got there I was taken to the Mississippi River to see how bad the flooding had become. I was completely surprised how bad it actually was, paths, parks and roads blocked off, due to the high level of water. I was told that Memphis had not had a serious flood like this since 1937 when the waters reaching a record height of 48.7ft. The flood in May managed to reach just below 48ft.

So, what could be the reason for this? Mother Nature fighting back? Global warming and climate change? Or could it be bad luck? I personally think that back in 1937, Memphians would say it was bad luck (or perhaps the hardcore Christians would say it was God’s work), but I think it could be more than that. Perhaps it is down to us causing global warming.

What I would like to know is what you readers think. Is it us or just ‘bad luck’?

Tom Oates, who is the director of research at exams agency Cambridge Assessment, said that “We have believed that we need to keep to the national curriculum up to date with topical issues, but oxidation and gravity don’t date. We are not taking it back 100 years, we’re taking it back to the core stuff. The curriculum has become narrowly instrumentalist. The national curriculum shouldn’t ever try to keep up with those, otherwise it would keep changing.”

Do you agree with Mr Oates? Should it just go back to basics and let our children grow up not knowing both sides of the global warming argument? Personally, I disagree with Mr Oates and believe that global warming should be taught, up-to-date, within the national curriculum.
